Paper Sculpture
Maps can be regarded as a symbol of the human desire to understand and be in control of our environment. Recording both geographical and political boundaries, they communicate a sense of place: here in relation to there.
However, the uncharted areas of a map have often been viewed with fear and apprehension. The Latin phrase Terra Incognita describes a variety of methods which have been used to represent the unknown on maps, often revealing as much about the outlook of the society that depicted them as the uncharted areas themselves. This project was an attempt to interpret the practise of Terra Incognita as two sets of paper sculptures representing differing outlooks individuals may have when faced with uncharted lands.
