Branding for Coburg House

Client: Coburg House Art Studios

Coburg House Art Studios in Leith approached me to refresh their branding and give them a fresh new look to match their renewed engagement with the community and desire to become a creative hub in the area.

The distinct shape and art deco façade of the building was identified as a huge part of the studios character and something that many of the tenants felt great affinity towards. Working with the tenants, I discussed and explored ways of representing this in the new branding, exploring various framing device that echoed the silhouette of the building. We eventually settled on the final shape that forms a ‘container’ for all the events that take place there but also emphasises Coburg House as an open and welcoming space.

Marketing the Open Studios

In addition to the identity design I cast a fresh eye on the posters and flyers used to advertise their twice-yearly open studios and mapped out the labyrinthine studios for the first time, creating a colour-coded map to help visitors navigate through the various studios.

As the previous flyer and poster designs used a large assortment of thumbnail images they were beginning to look cluttered and many of the tenants expressed a desire for a bold, clean look. I set in place a new format in which the jumble of small images are replaced by a single, classical-style  still life featuring a smaller collection of recent work across all disciplines by the creatives in the building . This drastically reduced the amount of administrative time needed to arrange and collate images for the marketing materials and helped the posters and flyers stand out more clearly in the visually ‘busy’ areas they were usually posted.
